Nothing is more frustrating than spending hours meticulously marking and folding a book, only to step back and realize the design is distorted or crooked. Fortunately, almost all book folding issues stem from a few common mistakes that are easy to prevent once you know what to look for.
1. Using the Wrong Ruler
Many craft rulers have a small gap between the absolute end of the ruler and the '0' mark. If you use one of these rulers, all your measurements will be off by a few millimeters, distorting your image. Always use a metal ruler where the measurements start exactly at the physical edge.
2. Forgetting to Center the Pattern
If your book has 400 pages and your pattern requires 300 pages, you shouldn't start folding on page 1. If you do, your design will be pushed all the way to the front, leaving 100 blank pages at the back. Always subtract the pattern pages from the book pages, divide the result by 2, and start folding at that calculated page.

3. Creasing the Pages Too Strongly with Fingernails
Using your fingernail to scrape a fold can tear or stretch the paper fibers, making the edges look fuzzy and worn. Use a dedicated bone folder or a clean plastic card to crease the pages smoothly and uniformly.
4. Skipping Pages During Calculations
Keep a highlighter or pencil handy to cross off each row of the pattern as you complete it. It's incredibly easy to lose your place, which throws off the entire vertical alignment of the sculpture.
